Web Gun #396 Pale Ale

A simple pale ale/SMaSH, mostly to get a starter going for the Birthday IPA. Named by my sons.

Recipe

Batch size: 1 gallon

Grain bill:

• 2 lb Marris Otter

Hops:

• 15 g Cascade (5.9%) @ 60
• 7.5 g Cascade (5.9%) @ 15
• 7.5 g Cascade (5.9%) @ 5

Yeast: Safale US-05

Brew Day

December 18, 2011: Ah, the joys of a one gallon batch. Mashed at 68 C (154 F). Gravity going into kettle was 1.035, which was lower than I expected.

Bottling

December 29, 2011: 1.007 FG, so 4% ABV. 6 Grolsch bottles after hydro sample. My youngest son helped bottle.

Tasting

January 6, 2012: First bottle. Very, very bitter -- not just hoppy, not just Cascadey, but bitter. I haven't figured out the IBUs but it's more than I would have guessed.
