My fiftieth batch!

Recipe

Batch size: 5 gallons

Grain bill:

  • 1 lb 3 oz Munich
  • 2 lb Marris Otter
  • 4 lb pale malt
  • 1 lb 1 oz wheat malt

Hops:

  • 0.5 oz Magnum (14.1%) @ 60
  • 2 oz Cascade (5%?) @ 15
  • 0.5 oz Cascade (5%?) @ 5

Yeast: T58 from Safbrew

Brew Day

September 22, 2013: 66 C in the mash, which is just about exactly what I was aiming for. I got a late start on this batch, but the kids self-entertained...wonderful. Gravity into the kettle was 1.041, which was lower than expected; I think I need to start adding a pound of base malt for luck, or maybe looking at my milling. Arlo pitched the yeast.

Bottling

September 28, 2013: Gravity 1.006, so 4.5% ABV. I couldn't find any dextrose, but John Palmer's "How To Brew" says I can use table sugar...huh. Went with 90 grams instead of my usual 100 g for dextrose. Paid the kids $2 each to help me bottle; yes, it's come to this.

Tasting

October 11, 2013: First bottle. Very young, herby; I hope that comes down in time. (I wouldn't have thought half a teaspoon of coriander would be too much...) Well carbed, can't taste anything from the sugar.
