Is Texe Anti-Semitic?

Well, is he?

My feeling is: Almost certainly.

No, Texe never comes out and accuses Jews of secretly running the world. Nor, as far as I can tell, has he ever offered The Protocols of the Elders of Zion for sale, or anything else overtly anti-Semitic. And I'll give him the benefit of the doubt -- though I'm less and less certain why I should, the more I read -- and say that I don't think he wants to break out the Zyklon B.

But: in the same way that Texe's flirtation with date-setting leaves little doubt that he's predicting imminent disaster, while still leaving room to wriggle free, his flirtation with anti-Semitism leaves little doubt about his true meaning -- while still leaving room for deniability. It's a very polite form of prejudice.

Check out this advertisement in the May 1998 newsletter for a tape called The Esther Option (read the full text here, on Texe's website):

Give a fool enough rope...

It might be argued that the quote from Chuck Carlson shows Texe isn't really anti-Semitic -- that while there are some (rich, powerful) Jews whose actions he finds reprehensible, he does not condemn the Jewish race itself as irredeemably evil. If this is true, then the best that you could say about Texe is that he's grossly irresponsible in the way he bandies about the usual anti-Semitic myths, and fantastically and horrifyingly ignorant of what has been done in the name of those myths.

Texe Marrs didn't strike me as an idiot, though. Whatever else he might be, throughout the interview he was articulate and intelligent. I suspect that Texe realized that, on this occasion, it suited him to be on on his best behaviour for a "liberal" Canadian audience and interviewer -- an interviewer that had failed to call Texe on his already-displayed willingness to flirt with anti-Semitism.

There are two caveats to be stated (Thank you, Cole Mitchell):

1. I am at a disadvantage: I'm unable to afford to buy all the materials in question (poor me!), and my local library has no more than a handful of his books. I'm relying on the copies I have of his newsletter, and the archive of the same on his website. For all I know, his tapes are actually full of stinging denunciations of anti-Semitism. Perhaps he's written whole books on why Jews are the greatest. Maybe some of his best friends are even Jews.
2. And, Texe did say in the interview:

   Now there's one group that I think are, they're evil in their works. And that's neo-Nazis. [...] I'm totally opposed to [Canadian Holocaust revisionist and anti-Semite Ernst] Zundel and this Holocaust revisionism. [...] Now, I think Zundel has every right to [speak freely]. And, and I want to add, I think that Jewish organizations and just good Christian folks of all stripes have every right to say, "Zundel, you are a nut." Hitler was a maniac, and I don't care if it was one hundred thousand or six million Jews-- You know, let's face it: there was a holocaust. We can quibble about numbers, but I'm not going to quibble about numbers. If he killed fifty people he was a monster.

• Why are there so many gratuitous references to someone being a Jew?
• Actually, screw the gratuitous references and insinuations: why does Texe keep writing that Jews control the American Civil Liberties Union, or "the media," or the Vatican, or maybe Russia, or possibly the whole world? Why the does he keep writing about "anti-Christian Jewish lobby groups" or "Christ-hating Jewish Rabbis"?

The astute among you will have noticed that the second paragraph had nothing to do with anti-Semitism. I could try and tie it in with Texe's pointed questioning about Hillary's new-found Jewishness...but really, with a phrase like "she and her lesbo-feminist girlfriends", how could I possibly resist?

In the November 1998 newsletter, Texe writes about American leglislation to establish a federal Office of Religious Persecution Monitoring (ORPM).

"Anti-Christian Jewish lobby groups in the U.S.A., such as the Jewish ADL, the World Jewish Congress, the ACLU, Freedom House, and the JDL, were all for the ORPM legislation. They planned to use ORPM to punish devout Moslems and crush Islamic nations like the impoverished Sudan in Africa. However, once the Jewish leadership realized that the bill, as written, could backfire on Israel, they decided to backtrack and rethink it."

From a WP advertisement, same issue: "The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Interviews Texe Marrs: Two BBC reporters came to America to interview Texe Marrs. Fascinating topics include: [...] Are wealthy Jews responsible for the global conspiracy?"

Why didn't I ask Texe how he felt about Jews? Because it honestly didn't occur to me. This shows, I think, the rather obvious lack of interviewing skills, and the background research that I didn't do.

Given what Texe had already published by the time I interviewed him in December 1997 (read quotes here, here, here and here) -- and which I'd already received, having been on his mailing list nearly a year -- it should have occurred to me. Given all that I've detailed above (find it yourself), I should not have waited until now (November 1999) to wonder about the references to Jews. But I did. In fact, previous versions of this essay were much more lenient toward Texe Marrs -- but I kept coming across more and more troubling quotes that have led me to my conclusions.

I have a lot to learn about interviewing people, and preparing thoroughly beforehand.
